kevinjapan.com is the convergence of my academic and casual interests in Japan. I am spending the next 14 months living between Yokohama and Tokyo. Updates include video footage, photos, and blog entries related to research and living in Japan. The site will be as bilingual as possible.
1.17.2011: Oshogatsu Omedetou Gozaimasu!
Happy New Year! The year of the rabbit has begun here in Japan, and I am getting back to work at the IUC. This term I will be conducting research and continuing preliminary dissertation work related to warrior families in medieval Japan. I just uploaded a longish vidblog above, documenting our travels to Kyoto, Nara, and around our home in the Tokyo/Yokohama area. I still have some old footage from summer that I will one day put to use, but for now enjoy our temple and shrine pilgrimage! It looks like I will be in Japan until late July or early August before heading back stateside to prep for preliminary exams.
11.22.2010: Vidblogs!
Sorry for the delay, life at IUC has been very busy as usual. I have cut together three video blogs thus far for the new version of the site, the newest is above and the others can be found in the vidblog section. Another video featuring Hakkejima Sea Paradise is coming soon, and I should be settling into a more regular update schedule now.
10.26.2010: Photographs!
New galleries are now online. Check out the gallery section for a number of photo sets, and the crawl on the right side of the page will constantly update with my most recent posts to flickr. Several new vidblogs are coming soon!
8.30.2010: Coming Back Online...
Welcome to the second iteration of kevinjapan.com! It's been 5 years since I last updated this site and 5 years since I left Japan. When I left I was an undergrad finishing up a dual degree in Japanese and Asian Studies. Since then I have gone on to complete a M.A. in Japanese history and am now in the 3rd year of work towards a Ph.D. However, the intent of this site is not to bore you with my ideas about Medieval Japan, but rather to share my experiences living, working, and studying in the land of the rising sun.
The site is still under development with the first vidblog, covering my drive home to Oregon from Michigan and preparations for coming back to Japan, soon to be released. The gallery section is already online with a few sets from my time here thus far.
The last time I lived in Japan, I stayed with a Japanese host family in the western suburbs of Tokyo in a small town called Hoya on the Seibu Ikebukuro line. This time, I am living in my own apartment on the Tokyu Toyoko line halfway between Shibuya and Yokohama in a small suburban town called Okurayama. I attend the IUC language center in the Pacifico Yokohama Building, and will be making periodic research trips around the Kanto region as well as traveling to Tokyo in my spare time.
Thanks for reading my site, more updates to come so please check back!
二番目のkevinjapan.comへようこそ!
